Adapt Content: Academic Language in Secondary Physical Education

Adapt Content: Academic Language in Secondary Physical Education

Academic Language in PE- Secondary

Academic Language in Secondary Physical Education is an app that allows students to learn game literacy. This app gives images and different terms so that students can be fluent in each activity before actually participating in it. This app allows Physical Education teachers to sample lesson of how to implement Academic Language in Physical Education. This app adapts content because it shows a technological way of enhancing students understanding of a sport. With this app teachers can introduce an activity in advance and prepare students for what is expected when participating, while also offering the proper language used in each activity.

This is not a free app, it cost $0.99. That is a onetime fee no subscription is needed, which is a plus; it’s not too expensive.  This application would be advantageous in the physical education classrooms. It allows the teachers to participate in helping with student literacy, and it gives students the preparation and understandings of each activity, which can be a confidence booster. I give this app a 4 out of 5 because it is beneficial and it introduces an insightful way of learning, while allowing both the teacher and students to interact with technology. The only limitation I see with this app is that there is a cost, although it is not expensive parents or schools may not approve of the fee especially if it is for every student.

  1. Anita,

Great application, I noticed this app as I was looking through certain ones to use myself. I like the idea of this application because it gives the kids a better understanding of different terminology's because not everyone loves sports or has been gifted athletically. Gives those students who aren't up to date with terms giving them a better chance to participate.

  2. Hi Eric,
Thanks! I completely agree. As much as I would love to believe everyone is a born athlete, it is not that way. I really enjoyed reading about this app because it takes a different approach to physical education, it introduces a understanding which is important in any discipline. The fact that there is a literacy that comes with physical education as well is not always realized.

  3. Anita, what a find! This is a great way to enhance student learning in PE. Using and understanding correct terms in the PE content area is so important--everyone needs to speak the same language. Great post!

    1. Thanks professor, I thought the exact same thing! It can be hard incorporating literacy into PE, however this app can really promote a better understanding for all students if used properly.
