Technology is the way of life.
There is not one person who can state that technology has not impacted them in
some way. Whether it is a positive or negative affiliation, technology plays
a role. It is the true navigation to the advancement of our society. The three
influential technologies I chose were, smartphone, global positioning
system (GPS), and the television.

Without my smart phone I feel helpless,
as a students mentioned in the “Learning to Change,
Changing to Learn: Student Voices" video. It has everything I need
to stay informed and function as a student and an upcoming professional. The
availability of having quick access to internet, emails and contacts at my
fingertips, games, apps, and music to occupy my down time, a calendar to keep
me on track and punctual, and a calculator to figure out simple math like tips
and tax percentages has truly help me develop as an independent adult. It is my
gigantic, gold, bright and loaded with information oasis! Having one device
that can help me keep track of my health through my fitness pal, my finances by
alerts of when and how to pay my bills, and learn new recipes and much more
through my favorite app Pinterest, is amazing!
Geography has always been an issue
for me. With the global positioning system (GPS) I now realize I am better at
recalling street names and different exits on the highway. Being someone who
enjoys traveling and taking mini road trips understanding directions is imperative.
With the help of a device such as the GPS, which is small and electronically
programed working off of satellite; it has made traveling a piece of cake! The
thought of a paper map scares me. I am sure there are positives to old fashion
ways of traveling, but if I have the luxury of having a computerized voice
telling me when to turn and what the name of the street is, I will take full
advantage of that. I don’t think it inhibits my ability to think critically; I believe
it gives another route of using your brain to navigate without the greater
chance of becoming frustrated and giving up. With a digital picture, it
enhances the understanding of the location; with a map it is one view all the
time.
When it comes to the television I
feel that is the first form of technology we are introduced to, to some extent.
You don’t need too much understanding to utilize it. You turn it on pick a
channel and you watch. The TV may be seen as a means for entertainment, but
growing up on Sesame Street and magic school bus, has definitely played a role
in my earlier stages of education. Now there are shows like Dora the explore
that incorporates language and Doc Mcstuffins that give a health aspect of
education. Educational programs on the big screen makes it fun to learn.
Looking at colors, shapes, numbers, solving problems and understanding why, is
more interesting at times than just looking at it in a book.
In the Learning to Change,
Changing to Learn: Student Voices" video, some of the
technologies named by the students and the uses are similar to what I named.
Once again, the smart phone can be used not only for personal uses, but for
projects as the fourth student in the video described. She uses her camera to
take pictures for her project, I not only use my camera for projects that are
school related, but for work related projects as well. I did not state a
laptop, camera, game system, iPod, or headphones as many of the students named,
however, the uses such as reading, writing, communication, learning about
yourself and the ability to start over I take advantage of on my phone. I am
always on the move, traveling, and working, none of the students stated a GPS
or television, but as long as technology is being utilized in an educational
way it is a positive experience. Unfortunately, I have yet to take advantage of
technology by creating websites, making music, or learning another language,
but I still have time!
Each form of technology that I chose
is a stepping stone to an easier and faster way of understanding important
information needed to develop in this society. As time continues new technological
means of learning will evolve, and as a progressive society we must evolve as
well or we will be left in the dark.
